Green Jobs and Skills in Central London

In March 2022, Central London Forward, Institute for Employment Studies and WPI Economics issued a paper that outlines and examines the potential scale and nature of green jobs across the Central London sub region. The report itself takes a mission based approach to identifying where job market will grow in all jobs that help to deliver net zero, or other environmental goals.
As of the most recent numbers reported in 2020, there are 147,000 green jobs in central London across 11 sectors that we identified. In Central London regions will see most growth in ‘Green Finance’ roles (jobs which help to fund and support net zero targets.) Central London as a sub regions also accounts for almost all of the capital’s jobs in this sector. It represents 34.1% (47,000 in the square mile) of central London’s green sector jobs, compared to 21.7% in London as a whole.
Some more important numbers for you - the total number of green jobs in the central scenario is projected to rise from 147,000 in 2020 to 335,000 in 2030 and 732,000 in 2050, representing a near-5-fold increase.
• Within this scenario, four sectors account for 9 in 10 (91.3%) of Central London’s total number of green jobs by 2050:
Green Finance (382,500), representing 52.3% of total green jobs. Power (119,800), representing 16.4% of total green jobs. Low Carbon Transport (85,900), representing 11.7% of total green jobs. Homes and Buildings (80,000), representing 10.9% of total green jobs It should also be noted for Career Leaders, that should you have students that are interested in pursuing this field that over ¾ of the current work force in the central London Green Sector have undergone a university pathway. This is not to say, other avenues will not be created in the future, but as it stands, this is where the market is.
