Three careers education visits to The Worshipful Company of Carmen

19 Aug 2022

The Central London Careers Hub delivered three careers education visits to The Worshipful Company of Carmen for London schools and colleges.

Over Spring and Summer Terms 2022, students from Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls' School, Canary Wharf College and Lubavitch Senior Girls' School visited the new hall of The Worshipful Company of Carmen in Fleet Street to learn about careers in transport and logistics.

The Worshipful Company of Carmen represents transport industries including road, rail, goods and passenger travel. Carmen are members of a City guild, a livery company, established in 1517 to regulate London’s transport, with a close relationship to schools with City origins.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the history of the Carmen, why transport and logistics is crucial for us all, roles available and routes into the sector.

The students particularly benefitted from hearing up-to-date and in depth sector knowledge from the international careers of the volunteers from the organisation speaking on the day. As well hearing information pertaining to current affairs, students were given a tour of the historical exhibits in the Museum and Gallery sections of the Hall.

These visits were organised at a time when skills shortages in transport and logistics, particularly for qualified HGV drivers, were highlighted in the headlines.

Jim French MBE, Managing Director of Road to Logistics, said:

“This was an ideal opportunity to put over the importance of the logistics sector to the economy and society and also to outline the careers and opportunities available to young people in the industry.”

Stephen Rinsler from Bisham Limited commented:

“The awareness of the complexity and excitement that supply chains and logistics can generate is not normally something school children would have the opportunity to engage with. Our talk gave us the chance to widen the possible careers they might follow.

"Having been very involved with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and transport and having worked my career throughout this sector, I know how important it is to broadcast the very wide variety of roles there are available. It also provided an opportunity to talk about the types of subjects that they would benefit from studying.”

Thank you to all The Worshipful Company of Carmen volunteers who supported and particularly to Clive Birch MBE (Principal, Radmore Birch Associates) and Allison Kemp MBE (Managing Director of A.I.M Commercial Services Ltd) for their initiative, dedication, and flexibility to deliver these career employer engagement events.

The Worshipful Company of Carmen will be hosting further visits in the academic year 22/23 for students attending schools and colleges in The Central London Careers Hub.
